What Is SEER?
Interested in a more energy-efficient air conditioning (AC) system for your Austin home?
Replacing your air conditioning system could reduce your energy usage and help you save anywhere from 20 to 40 percent on cooling costs, according to the Department of Energy (DOE).
But when opting for an upgrade, don’t forget about the SEER, or seasonal energy efficiency ratio, rating. As the most trusted heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) company in all of Texas, AiRCO Heating & Air Conditioning is here to help. We can replace your current air conditioning system with a newer, more efficient model with a higher SEER rating and enhance your indoor comfort.
What Does SEER Mean?
The SEER rating of an air conditioner refers to the amount of energy needed for the system to operate. Your energy expenses will be higher if more energy is used, making air conditioning systems that use less energy to cool your home more appealing.
What Is Considered a Good SEER Rating?
SEER ratings typically range from 13 to 26. Systems with higher SEER ratings are considered the most energy efficient. Our AiRCO professionals recommend installing an air conditioning system with a SEER rating of at least 14.5—any system with this SEER rating or above is ENERGY STAR® certified.
What Does ENERGY STAR Certified Mean?
An ENERGY STAR qualification indicates the system meets certain criteria for energy efficiency. When you’re looking to reduce your energy usage and save on your monthly energy bills, opt for ENERGY STAR certified systems. ENERGY STAR certifications aren’t only limited to air conditioners—there are also ENERGY STAR certified heat pumps, furnaces, and water heaters.
Is There Anything Else I Can Do for Greater Energy Efficiency?
When you’re looking for optimal energy efficiency, another key factor to consider in an air conditioner is its stage. Air conditioning systems are classified as single-stage, two-stage, or variable speed. Each stage refers to the compressor’s mode of operation.
The compressor of a single-stage system is only capable of operating at one speed. These systems are either on or off.
Two-stage systems have a compressor that can function at both high or low speeds. The compressor can operate at the lower level during average outdoor temperatures and then at the higher level when it’s warmer outside, allowing you to feel comfortable no matter what the outdoor temperature is. Two-stage air conditioners are more efficient than one-stage.
Variable speed air conditioning systems are the most energy efficient of all. The compressor can operate at many different levels, ranging from lower capacity to full capacity and anything in between. With variable speeds, the system is unrestricted and capable of providing optimal comfort by continuously blowing cool air.
There are plenty of additional ways you can improve the energy efficiency of your home in general, including:
- Weatherstripping your windows and doors.
- Insulating your attic.
- Sealing your air ducts to prevent air leaks and tears.
- Installing a programmable thermostat.
- Upgrading to a zone control system.
