Make a difference in your neighborhood – and you!

We recently had a great time volunteering again for It’s My Park Day on March 1st at Boggy Creek Park. We mulched, cleaned the creek, painted and had fun helping to make our Austin parks more beautiful and a safe, fun place to relax.
Volunteering is an ongoing part of our Airco community and can be a great way to engage with our neighbors. We all know that volunteering is important for helping others in need, but did you know that there are many benefits for the volunteer? It can be hard to find time to volunteer, but the benefits are enormous to you, your family, and your community.

Volunteering has a great impact on the community and allows you to connect to your community and make it a better place.

Volunteering helps you make new friends and contacts. One of the best ways to make new friends is to work together in a shared activity. Volunteering is a great way to meet new people, especially if you are new to an area, and increases your social and relationship skills.

Volunteering as a family. Children watch everything you do and by giving back to the community, you show them how volunteering can make a difference and learn about the resources in your community. Your children will also learn how good it feels to help others and make positive change.

Volunteering combats depression. A key risk factor for depression is social isolation and volunteering keeps you in regular contact with others and helps you develop a solid support system.

Places to find the right volunteer opportunity:

• Community theaters, museums, and monuments

• Libraries or senior centers

• Service organizations such as Lions club or Rotary clubs

• Youth organizations, sports teams, and after-school programs

• Historical restorations and national parks

• Places of worship such as churches or synagogues
