Founded in 1881 by Captain Fergus Kyle, the town was settled next to the International Great Northern Railroad. Pulitzer Prize winning author, Katherine Anne Porter, called Kyle home from 1892 to 1901, with many of her famed short stories taking place in and around Kyle.

To this day, the Katherine Anne Porter Literary Center welcomes visiting writers for readings and signings, while her home serves as home for another writer and is open to the public. Many world-renowned writers like Tim O'Brien, Robert Stone, Mary Gaitskill and Charles Simic continue to visit the Center for readings.
